The artist is Pasternak
Pasternak was the first illustrator of the novel „Resurrection “and a number of other works of the writer. In the picture „L. N. Tolstoy with his family in Yasnaya Polyana “He created a complete penetration of the image „Great Elder “In everyday life. The light of the table lamp reveals part of the living room of the manor house and the figure of its inhabitants – his older daughter disgraces his father’s mail, the writer’s wife comfortably settled with the sewing nearby. He himself sits at a distance in a comfortable position, carefully listening to reading. His head with a familiar sales beard looks expressive against the background of a light wall. The picture is built on the harmonious unity of man and an emotionally interpreted environment, perceived as a spiritual „Portrait of “inhabitants. Here the fragmented composition itself causes the effect „habituality “, multiple repeatability of the situation, and dynamic, „Flowing “Pastel’s smears create a feeling of atmosphere of spirituality. Thanks to this, the impressionistic group portrait becomes an important document of the intellectual life of Russian society in the early twentieth century. (AT. To.) Russian portrait. XX century.
