Dmitry Tsarevich was killed

The artist is Nesterov

One of the most poetic works of Nesterov of the pre -revolutionary period. This time, the artist was not worried about the problem of “asceticism”, but the problem of “martyrdom”, innocent suffering.

“Dmitry-Tsarevich killed” is one of Nesterov’s most poetic works, which reflected the artist’s interest in the problem of martyrdom, innocent suffering. In the summer of 1895, he specially visited Uglich, where he examined the places and relics associated with the stay of Tsarevich Dmitry, numerous icons with his image, other attractions that significantly helped the complication of the final concept of the picture. Obviously, Nesterova in this case was not interested in the historical personality of the prince, but the legend of him. In it, the artist saw the opportunity to express his innermost, intimate, romantic experiences related to issues of love, life and death. The picture is one of the most subtle in the mood of non -tutor works. Electronic catalog “Heroes and villains of Russian history”. SPb, 2010. With. 122.

In the catalog of the personal exhibition of Nesterov in 1907, the name of the picture was accompanied by an explanation: “According to popular belief, the souls of the deceased for nine days are on earth, without leaving their loved ones”. By this, the artist seemed to indicate that the design of the work is much wider than the legend about the “lad-martyr”. “The most odious, most acute picture at the exhibition,” as Nesterov wrote about it, became, perhaps, the thinnest in its mood among the works of those years. The delicate colors of her enlightened spring landscape, Dmitry’s touching figure should cause a sense of sadness and at the same time mental tenderness. Pavel Klimov. The charm of kitezh. // Mikhail Nesterov. SPb, 2012. With. eighteen.

With the death of the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible Tsarevich Dmitry (1582-1591), which caused a long political crisis, many mysteries and legends are connected. The most popular of them is the version of his intentional murder. Dmitry died in Uglich on May 15, 1591. On this day, according to eyewitnesses, he played “poke”: he threw a pointed knife into the ground. Suddenly, he began an attack of “blackness”, that is, epilepsy, and the prince either fell on a knife, or “shake” him. Next to Dmitry at that moment were the mother of Vasilisa Volokhova, Cormilica Arina Tuchkova and the bedding of Marya Kolobova. Hearing screams, the queen ran out into the courtyard and saw her only son dead. The investigation commission sent by Godunov, which included the future king, Prince Vasily Shuisky, established death from an accident. The tragic death of Tsarevich Dmitry was interpreted by popular rumor as a murder committed according to Boris Godunov in order to clear his way to the throne. This event, in fact, laid the foundation for the vague time and caused the appearance of “False Dmitriy”. Tsarevich Dmitry in 1606 was canonized in the face of a noble.
